The Sperry Gyroscope Company was founded by Elmer Ambrose Sperry in Brooklyn, New York in 1910 to manufacture navigation equipment, chiefly his own inventions, such as the marine gyrostabiliser and the gyrocompass.

Sperry also served on a number of US committees on mines, torpedoes and aids to navigation.
