Summary

Charles J. Mare established Ditchburn and Mare Shipbuilding Company with Thomas Ditchburn in 1836.

When their partnership came to an end in 1846 Mare continued to operate the shipbuilding yard, building more than fifty vessels for the British Navy and other navies worldwide until his retirement from the company in 1856.

C. J. Mare and Thames Ironworks & Shipbuilding Co. built 143 warships and 287 merchant ships at Blackwall between 1840 and 1911, and some of them were the largest in their day.

Charles J. Mare also founded the Millwall Iron and Shipbuilding Co which operated until 1866.
