Abstract

Torpedo of Wellington, New Zealand, writes; "Were a ship caught in a river where she cannot manoeuvre readily, she would easily fall prey to torpedo boats attacking in numbers, unless certain precautions were used to keep them off. It appears to me that they might be set as at defiance if a number of spar torpedoes were rigged out from the side of the ship. The inner ends of these could be hinged, and the outer ends topped up out of the water when the ships are under steam. A launch would have small chance of success with the attacked ship bristling with spar torpedoes."
