The Katahdin's (length, 251ft.; beam, 43ft. 5in.; draught, 15ft.; displacement, 2183 tons; speed, 16 knots) greatest forte was her strength and manoeuvrability. The ram was formed from a 14-ton casting, with massive girders and longitudinales converging to it from the deck, keel, and sides, these were in turn well stiffened by breast hooks, and intercostal frames and beams, ensuring that there was no local weaknesses.
