Abstract

'The British Government had recently intrusted Messrs. Yarrow and Co., of Poplar, with the construction of two steel stern-wheel shallow-draught steamers (length, 90ft.; beam, 16ft.; draught, 2ft.), to serve as gunboats on the Zambesi and Shire. Another six boats were also being built for the Portuguese Government for service in the same district.
