Abstract

The 1880's classification for torpedoes or mines was as follows: (1) Those fired at will from the shore when a vessel is seen to be in their vicinity, i.e. observation mines; (2) those fired from the shore on contact with a vessel, i.e. electro-contact mines; (3) those having no cables or connection with the shore, with the firing arrangements being completely self-contained, i.e. contact mines.
