- Abstract
On the 10th of December 1884 the Hon. Henry W. Blair, United States Senator, Washington submitted the following resolution to the U.S.A. Senate: "That the Committee on Naval Affairs be instructed to investigate the system of naval defence for the seaports of the United States proposed by Captain John Ericsson, especially with a view to ascertaining the efficiency of his new submarine gun and projectile torpedo for that purpose…" A copy of John Ericsson's letter to the Senator outlining the development and tests already conducted on his submarine gun and projectile torpedo was also read before the Senate in support of Senator Blair's resolution.
