Abstract

The submarine trials that had been carried out at Cherbourg in early January 1901 in the presence of the French Ministers of War and Marine had naturally awakened a great deal of fresh interest in France. The object of M. de Lanessan and General Andre descending in the Morse and Narval was to make a comparison between the two systems, and thus guide them in the selection of the best type for the seventeen boats to be constructed under the new programme, which, with, those already laid down or projected, would bring the total number of French submarines to nearly forty.
