Abstract

'Old Screw' requests information on the diameter, the pitch, the number of blades, and the working pressure of the Ariel's boiler (John I. Thornycroft supplied the following details in reply: the Ariel's three bladed propeller was 26 in. in diameter, had a mean pitch of 3 ft. 6 in., and each blade had a surface area of 82 square inches, the boiler pressure was between 100 to 120 pounds per square inch, but equally good results had been obtained with a pressure of 90 pounds per square inch.).
