Abstract

'The recent successful trials of the Patrick and Sims-Edison torpedoes and the popular interest caused by performances of the English Brennan torpedo have served to reawaken a discussion in American naval circles as to the development of means sufficient to resist their attacks. Quick-firing guns have now been brought up to such a point by the increase in the offensive and defensive power of swift torpedo boats as to threaten completely to abolish the use of surface torpedo boats in marine warfare, unless the latter can be rendered proof against those terribly destructive weapons, the new rapid-firing guns of large calibre.'
