Abstract

"John Louis Lay, formerly engineer in the United States Navy, inventor of the torpedo with which Cushing blew up the Confederate warship Albemarle in 1864, and later attached to the Peruvian Navy, died homeless and penniless last Monday in Bellevue Hospital."
