Abstract

The Royal Navy's future requirements in the Underwater Battlespace are centred upon identifying capabilities, which will permit it to choose the best platform solution in terms of both cost and war fighting effectiveness. The author has no doubts that the Underwater Battlespace will be a centre of gravity in any future conflict; however, we will see far more risky activities being conducted remotely. A suite of integrated UUVs using secure communications will provide a considerable portion of the RN's capability needs. We will also see many of the capabilities delivered by UWB platforms - from intelligence support to land attack missiles - directly affecting the wider battle space, and thus provide the Joint Force Commander with a range of war winning capabilities.
