Description

Application filed October 3, 1883. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,455

Accession No.1328

Abstract

"By extensive experiments in submarine gunnery made under my direction I have discovered that in the discharge of a projectile of considerable length from a gun under water there is always a tendency in the rear end or tail of the projectile to rise immediately on leaving the gun, and consequently the projectile has a tendency to dive or descend. This is invariably the case, no matter how well the projectile has been balanced lengthwise or how well nearly its weight may correspond with the weight of the water it displaces. The object of my invention is to overcome or counteract these tendencies, and to control in a vertical direction the course of the projectile; and to this end the principal feature of the invention consists in what I call a "steering-plate" attached to and projecting from the upper side of the tail or after part of the projectile…"
