Requirements such as surface speed, radius of action, and armament are differ according to the use submarines will be put to in times of war and the ideas of the various nations for whom they are built. In 1909 there were certain requirements that were considered to be desirable in all submarines, these were influenced to a greater or lesser extent by the propulsion system used.
