Abstract

"Operations and capability policymaking officers from the UK Royal Navy (RN) Submarine Service have articulated how they foresee improved connectivity and advanced intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities transforming the contribution of the nuclear attack submarine (SSN) to joint operations. Speaking at the Royal Navy Submarine Services centennial conference at the University of Lancaster, staff officers from the fleet and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) laid out a future vision underpinned by a wholesale shift to a network-centric concept of operations. They also outlined initiatives and options for a range of new equipment capabilities designed to improve the SSN's operational effectiveness in littoral waters."
