Abstract

"France's state owned naval shipbuilding, systems and services group DCN has secured the future of its nuclear submarine business after concluding terms with the Delegation Generale pour l'Armament (DGA) for the EUR8 billion (USD10.5 billion) Barracuda nuclear-attack submarine (SSN) programme. The six Barracuda-class SSN's each displacing 4,765 tons submerged will progressively replace the navy's six Rubis-class boats. Seen as a key component of the navy's future force projection capability, the new submarines will have an outload of up to 20 weapons, comprising a mix of Scalp Naval cruise missiles, SM-39 Exocet anti-ship missiles and a new generation heavyweight torpedo."
