Abstract

In early March 1889 a series of trials of a torpedo boat (length 137 feet, beam 13 feet 9 inches; trial speed 21 knots) fitted with an inverted-vertical triple-expansion marine engine with cylinders of 15-inch by 22 and a half inch by 33 and a half inch by 18 -inch stroke operating at 312 revolutions per minute on steam supplied at 160 pounds per square inch by a marine locomotive boiler fuelled with an unspecified liquid fuel injected by compressed air.
