Abstract

Observers at the English and French torpedo boat manoeuvres had both concluded that whilst basin experiments were highly satisfactory, those made at sea proved with equal force the unreliability of these craft when they left the coast. In the Revue des Deux Mondes of June 1886 Du Pin de Saint Andre admitted that despite the successful use of torpedo boats for harbour and coastal defence this proved nothing as to what they may or may not be able to do at sea.
