Abstract

It was reported that an unnamed American engineering journal had questioned whether it was wise to go beyond a speed of 25 knots for destroyers, and build 30-knot destroyers, which had 75 percent more power. In their opinion the advantages of such a phenomenal burst of speed were doubtful, and that staunch, reliable vessels with good sea-going qualities, and bunker capacity were of greater value.
