Abstract

An accident involving a broken piston rod occurred on board the French torpedo boat No. 228 whilst she was steaming at a speed of 25.5 knot near Cherbourg in early April 1900. Five men were severely scalded by escaping steam, one was drowned when he dived overboard, and another two were not expected to survive.
