The 35-knot destroyers Express and Viper had three funnels, and were to be based at Devonport and not Portsmouth as originally thought. As a rough guide any four-funnelled destroyer could be put down as a Devonport boat; nearly all Portsmouth boat had three funnels, with a mast before the fore funnel, whilst destroyers with two funnels were usually based at Sheerness.
