Experiments with a new system of gun laying against torpedo boats, invented by Mr. H. W. Metcalfe, the engineer of the destroyer Earnest had been carried out at Gibraltar. It was claimed that if the new system were proved to be successful, night attacks by torpedo boats would be practically impossible. Details of the system were kept confidential, but it was reported to be exceedingly simple and practically automatic.
