Abstract

The Admiralty had placed an order for four water-tube boilers with Mr. A. Mumford, Colchester, these were to be installed in H.M torpedo destroyer Salamander (length 230 feet, beam 27 feet, draught 10 feet 6 inches; displacement 735 tons) built at Chatham Dock Yard and completed in July 1891. A special feature of the Mumford water-tube boilers was the ease with which they could be repaired. See also 'The Mumford water-tube boiler.' The Engineer, vol. 79, 7 June 1895, p. 486.
