Abstract

It was reported in the Standard that a fireman and a seaman had been killed as the result of an accident aboard the Italian first-class torpedo boat Aquilia (length 152 feet 7 inches, beam 16 feet 9 inches; draught 4 feet 6 inches) on the 3rd of July 1895. Another three crew members died as a result of burns received during the accident, and another five crew members were expected to die as a result of injuries received during the accident, and the body of an engineer blown overboard at the time of the accident was later found by fishermen at Riomaggiore. As the Aquila was undergoing full-speed trials at the time it was thought that the speed, and the head of steam were excessive, and that the breakdown occurred in the link motion reversing gear. The crown of the furnace then collapsed dragging with it the fore part of the boiler, and the tubes.
