Abstract

Captain Eardley-Wilmont writing on "Ordnance' and the "Torpedo" in The Development of Navies during the last Half-century, R. N. Seeley and Co., London, 1892, confirmed the editor's opinion that the 30 ton, or 50 ton gun should be the largest commonly used and that no double bottom or finely subdivided cellular systems could prevent the destruction of a vessel by a Whitehead torpedo.
