Abstract

Two accidents involving torpedo boats occurred during manoeuvres of Portland in 1887. Firstly, torpedo boats No. 43 and No. 66 collided, severely damaging the bow of torpedo boat No. 43. Secondly, the boiler of torpedo boat No. 47 burst during full-speed trials being run between Portland and Torquay. Three members of the crew died as a result of injuries received.
