Abstract

Operating at 480 revolutions per minute, the engines illustrated in 'Torpedo boats for the Russian Government.' The Engineer, vol. 57, 13 June 1884, pp. 442 and 453.' and 'Torpedo boats for the Russian Government.' The Engineer, vol. 57, 20 June 1884, pp. 460 and 466.' were too fast for driving the air and circulating pumps of the torpedo boat built for the Russian Government. As a result a separate engine running at 180 revolutions per minute had to be provided, this consisted of two inverted-vertical simple cylinders 5 inches in diameter, the piston rods of which were directly coupled with the pump rods below. Double connecting rods were used and the feed and bilge pumps were worked directly from the ends of the dog links.
