In a paper read at the King's College Engineering Society on the 24th of January 1879 A L Alliman stated that the speeds attained by Yarrow's torpedo boats had surpassed those of Thornycroft's. He validated his argument by comparing the performance of a number of boats built by both firms. [Such comparisons are debatable as each firm was competing against the other and other torpedo boat builders of the time.]
