The completion of the Polyphemus (length, 240 ft.; beam 40 ft.; draught forward, 19 ft. 6 in.; aft, 20 ft. 6 in.; displacement 2,640 tons.) gave the Royal Navy a novel and apparently formidable addition, untested in actual warfare.
