Abstract

"Engineers as a whole have received very little attention from historians, and even professional engineers have been treated patchily, with little regard to their special skills and aspirations. Hitherto, the tendency has been to consider the development of engineering, in so far as it has been considered at all, as a series of biographies of the great engineers, with their subjects chosen almost exclusively from engineers that flourished between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries."
