This article focuses on increasing antisubmarine warfare (ASW) research and the development of new shallow-water methodologies keeping pace with the changing threat. There is a need for revitalization at a time when ASW forces are in rapid decline. Over the past 40 years, ASW has been a very expensive, seldom used warfare capability, involving hull-mounted or towed sonars on most warships, the development of dedicated weapons and aircraft types, driving manning and training requirements.
