Abstract

"An invention for the protection of ship's sides from the effects of torpedoes has just been submitted by the officers of Chatham Dockyard to the Lords of the Admiralty… The invention consists of a protecting screen or shield, which can be lowered or raised in less than five minutes… One of the chief points of the invention is that it can be raised in so short a time and stowed in a snug position on the top sides of any ironclad, and without in any way interfering with the firing of the guns."
