Abstract

“The use of CCTV for ‘crime prevention’ surveillance in public streets and places is now quite common in Australian and British cities. The issues driving this development over the past two decades have been the convergence of an increasing fear of crime amongst the public and a desire by city councils to rejuvenate city centres as safe places to live, entertain, shop and work. Government-sponsored Safe City programs in the UK and Australia have been the principal advocates for improving crime prevention measures in the interest of community safety. Both city councils and police services have embraced CCTV as a useful means to address these important social and planning issues.”
