Abstract

During the Naval Manoeuvres 1892 Admiral St. John's Blue Squadron sought shelter in the poorly fortified Belfast Lough were it was protected by a series of minefields laid down from ships' stores. These were then cleared by Admiral Fitzroy's countermining operation, thereby ensuring the Red Squadron's victory over the opposing Blue Squadron's forces.
