Abstract

In the 25th of February 1887, issue of Engineering the Editors defined the qualities that should be combined in cruisers whose principal armament was the torpedo. They believed that only three torpedoes - the Whitehead, Swartzkopf and Howell were capable of meeting these. They also believed that the use of controlled torpedoes electrical or otherwise from naval vessels whilst they were underway was impractical.
