In 1888 locomotive torpedoes were divided into two classes, the uncontrolled type which were represented by the Whitehead and Howell torpedoes and those which could be directed by means of a wire or wires represented by the Lay and Brennan torpedoes that were usually spoken of as being controlled torpedoes. This article describes both classes in some detail.
