Abstract

'While phishing or social engineering has more recently been associated with computer hackers, the art of gaining information about a person through pretext has been a tool used by private investigators since long before the first computers were invented. A pretext is all about pretending. The movie "Catch Me If You Can' was a perfect example of pretending to be someone you are not, in order to gain something. However, in the case of an investigation, the aim of pretext is not to steal money or commit fraud, but rather to obtain information.'
