An account of a trial of Elswick quick-fire guns in comparison with French guns converted to quick-fire action for the Navy was published in the Journal des Debats. The report was couched in measured and sober language, and the writer appeared to have born in mind some of the circumstances that placed the English guns at a disadvantage when compared with their French rivals.
