Abstract

It had been known for some time that the Admiralty authorities were experiencing serious problems with the locomotive boilers in torpedo boats. The tubes in the boilers appeared to have kept fairly tight during a run, but as soon as steam was let down leakages occurred, and in many cases they were so serious as to disable the boiler. The Admiralty had experimented with a variety of methods of fixing tubes, but none had been completely successful.
