Abstract

'Here are some tips for conducting a foot follow: Keep correct distance from the subject. Travel on opposite sides of the road if possible, at forty-five degrees to the subjects rear. Use window reflections to monitor the subject while not looking directly at them. Use shops or gardens to stop and take quick video of the subject walking along. Consider entering shops or other businesses and record the subject through the windows (be more careful using banks as they may alarm their security). Consider actually walking directly and closely behind the subject when in reasonably crowded shopping areas, while recording video from a hand held camera. Use a flip screen and a wide-angle lens setting, but do not continually stare at the camera, simply walk along occasionally glancing at the screen to ensure the shot is framed correctly. Close up quickly (run) as soon as they turn a corner or disappear from view. Consider hiring a taxi. If using a vehicle, change appearance, if possible, as soon as leaving the vehicle. Take a cap off or put one on - the opposite of the 'in-vehicle' appearance. A foot follow can yield valuable investigative information - consider utilising some of the techniques discussed to ensure positive results.'
