Abstract

'The inventor fires one of his inventions. It strikes the stump of a tree. E. S. Sylvester's store suffered badly. Windows in the vicinity all broken.' This account of the 31 October, 1896, incident when Patrick Cunningham launched a section of one of his rocket torpedoes down the main street of New Bedford would appear to be the source or one of the sources used by E. S. Allen in his article in the Yankee, dated March 1958. See the attached correspondence from Laura C. Pereira.
