Abstract

'Six military personnel and 14 civilians died when the fire-extinguishing system (FES) in a Russian-built Akula I (Project 971) submarine was activated in error on 8 November. A further 22 people were injured following the release of freon gas in the nuclear-powered attack boat Nerpa which was undergoing trials in the Sea of Japan prior to an anticipated handover to the Indian Navy in 2009.'
