"Italy's General Directorate for Naval Armaments has placed an order for a second batch of two Todaro-class (Type 212A) submarines for the Italian Navy. Shipbuilder Fincantieri is scheduled to deliver the 1,830-ton, 56-m diesel-electric boats, equipped with air-independent propulsion, in 2015 and 2016. Each Todaro-class boat is equipped with a MTU 16V 396 diesel engine and a hybrid fuel cell/battery propulsion system based on Siemens proton exchange technology, giving a maximum speed of 20 kt (dived) and a range of 8,000 n miles at 8 kt (surfaced)."
