"Design work on the KSS-III submarine for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) is scheduled to start in 2007 with a joint team to be assembled by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundi Heavy Industries (HHI). The KSS-III will be an indigenous design, variously reported as displacing either 3,000 or 3,500 tons. Up to nine platforms will eventually be built to replace the nine 1,100 ton (surfaced) Chang Bogo (Type 209)-class KSS-I boats commissioned between 1993 and 2001."
