Abstract

"On the 2nd of March 2007 the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced that the programme to develop a replacement for Us submarine-based nuclear warheads had moved forward with the selection of a design produced by US's leading nuclear weapons laboratories. A team from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Sandia National Laboratory will lead this effort - called the Reliable Replacement Warhead - 1 (RRW-1) - which the NNSA claims will allow for safer, more secure weapons, while also providing greater reliability that could enable further reductions in Washington's nuclear weapon holdings."
