Described as "a machine constructed to run a trial trip" the torpedo boat's reliability under normal conditions far from being above reproach, as was amply proven by an exercise organised by Captain Long of the Royal Navy involving 12 torpedo boats formed into two divisions racing against each other during evolutions in the Channel.
