Abstract

The torpedo ram Polyphemus (length 240 feet between perpendiculars, beam 40 feet, draught 20 feet; displacement 2640 tons) under construction at Chatham Dockyard was the most extraordinary vessel built up to that time. She was both novel and peculiar in form, structure, fittings and armour, and as a fighting ship she was to be used as a combined ram and armoured torpedo boat.
