Abstract

A twelve-hour coal consumption at twelve knots was carried out on the torpedo boat destroyer Syren at Portsmouth in mid-September 1901. The coal consumption was later calculated to be 2.2 pounds per indicated horsepower hour. Only two of the Syren's four boilers were used during the trial.
