The author speculated as to the effect of making each crank cheek into a disc provided with a heavy rim - the said discs could be as large as the crank pits permitted. The centre of gravity would then be outside the circle described by the crank pin, thereby creating a centrifugal force greater in magnitude than the effort of the connecting-rod when its centre of gravity moved through its appointed path in one revolution.
