W Gordon disputed the claim made in The Engineer of 2 January 1891 that no one had produced a really successful water-tube boiler citing his earlier work with Messrs. Merryweather in 1881 in which they had constructed a water-tube boiler capable of working at pressures up to 120 pounds per square inch.
